Minnesota Basketball lands William & Mary transfer Luke Loewe
Newly-appointed head coach Ben Johnson hasn’t wasted any time adding some talent for the 2021-2022 season, as former William & Mary guard Luke Loewe announced Tuesday via his Twitter account that he will be transferring to Minnesota Basketball. Loewe is joining EJ Stephens, a transfer from Lafayette who announced his commitment to the Gophers last week.
"“I’ve been living on the East Coast for four years, but I’m a Midwest, blue-collar kid, so I’m a tough player, I pride myself on just playing hard all the time. I really enjoy playing defense, so that’s one thing that a lot of people like about me.Luke Loewe"
Loewe is a combo guard who has the capability to handle the ball and facilitate from the point guard position. One can assume going up a level in competition probably means taking a little bit of a back seat when it comes to being the main ball handler. This is perfect for Loewe, who really makes his money playing off the ball. Coming off screens for catch and shoots and attacking the rim off of high ball screens.
Loewe is coming off his best collegiate season, averaging 16.2 points, 3.2 assists, and 3.4 rebounds. Earning himself a spot on the 2nd team all Colonial Athletic Conference. Loewe is a 35% career three-point shooter who started 79 of his 80 games at William & Mary. Loewe was also named to the 2nd team all-defense.
With the loss of Marcus Carr, the Gophers leading scorer, Loewe and Stephens will be expected to pick up some of the scoring if the Gophers want to have any kind of success in 2021-2022. The Gophers are still in contention for the number one prospect in the 2021 class Chet Holmgren whose dad played for Minnesota in the 80s. Holmgren is expected to sign with Gonzaga but if the stars align, it would change the entire landscape of Minnesota basketball and change the role Loewe going into next season.
With seven months until the upcoming season, there is a lot that can change but as it sits right now expect Loewe to do be a day one starter and to be playing north of twenty-five minutes a night for the Gophers.
