By Andrew Tineo
Over the course of the previous six years, it seems like Kyler Edwards has been special and showed flashes of his potential. Only for other players to become the go-to scorer as Edwards takes a back seat.
It doesn’t just start in Lubbock, as prior to his commitment to the Red Raiders, Edwards played with a generational talent in High School.
As a junior in Bowie, Edwards shared the same backcourt with former No. 1 overall recruit and future NBA draft pick, Cade Cunningham. Both residing in the Arlington area, it was easy to take notice of the future star in Cunningham.
Edwards exited high school, ranked as the 159th player in the country and a consensus three-star, according to 247.
After limited playing time, on a national championship finalist team as a freshman, Edwards was hoping to make the big jump and he did, starting all 31 games and averaging 11.4 points per game.
In hope of an All-Big 12 caliber junior year, Edwards was taken a back seat to Mac McClung, during this past season. The ground-shaking announcement that Edwards set on a new location, however, was Chris Beard’s decision to head coach the University of Texas.
Although, with Mark Adams coming in as the new head coach of the Red Raiders, Edwards was looking for greener pastures for this upcoming year.
Coming off of their best season since 1984, it was pretty fitting for Edwards to find a home in a place that just developed a guard, into a player of the year in Quentin Grimes
The comparisons draw quite similarities between Edwards and Grimes, as Grimes was also a former Big 12 player. coming from Kansas and was not the most efficient scorer, during his tenure with the Jayhawks.
Edwards however, is slightly more polished and experienced at the collegiate level, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention this past year.
Here’s a look at what to expect from Edwards and how he can win AAC Player of the Year in 2021-2022.
