NCAA Basketball: Analyzing 6 finalists for Utah transfer guard Alfonso Plummer
BYU Cougars
Plummer is very familiar with Utah’s rival in the Cougars, as he scored 19 points against them in Provo this past season. It wouldn’t be much of a move and the guard would be joining the better program currently. They also are in big need of a starting guard for next season, as both Brandon Averette and Alex Barcello have graduated and could be going pro.
Even if one of them were to come back to be the primary ball-handler, Plummer would still be a big need for BYU, who lacked a perimeter player that can create their own shot consistently. With center Matt Haarms future also uncertain, it would be difficult to project the Cougars as an NCAA Tournament at-large team next season. That may give Plummer pause compared to the other teams on the list.
Florida Gators
The Gators lost a ton of talent this offseason but made up for it in a big way, landing four quality transfers in the past couple of weeks. On the perimeter, Florida added 15 ppg Penn State guard Myreon Jones, 20 ppg scorer Phlandrous Fleming, Jr. from Charleston Southern, and 15 ppg point guard Brandon McKissic from UMKC.
Including returning point guard Tyree Appleby, the Gators will have a good backcourt, and adding Plummer would give them better perimeter shooting on the court. The issue is that unless they go with a three-guard lineup, Plummer may end up being the 6th man off the bench as Jones will certainly start along with whoever is the lead point guard. Joining a backcourt filled with so many new pieces could leave someone out and the smaller Plummer may suffer if he’s not as good defensively.
