Florida State Basketball continues to score talent this offseason, this time in a former top-50 prospect in Cam’Ron Fletcher. The small forward had one of the toughest seasons for any player, limited to just nine games played after being “suspended” for an in-game outburst while with the team and being relegated to the bench afterward.

Fletcher had nine points in the season-opener against Morehead State and even started in the following game against Richmond. But as sometimes what happens with the Wildcats and certain freshmen, he could never get back into the rotation. Yet as we’ve seen with Johnny Juzang at UCLA, players leaving Kentucky can still end up wildly successful.

The Seminoles are certainly hoping so, as Flecther joins one of the top groups of newcomers in the country. They have a top-5 incoming recruiting class, led by five-star wing Matthew Cleveland, along with top-60 prospects, Jalen Warley and John Butler. There’s also Caleb Mills, an earlier transfer from Houston that was an all-conference performer and double-digit scorer as well.

That doesn’t even include several key returners such as Sardaar Calhoun (assuming he comes back from NBA Draft consideration), double-digit scoring starter Anthony Polite, and 6’6 forward Malik Osborne. There’s also Naheem McLeod, Tanor Ngom, and Quincy Ballard at the center position. It’s important to have all of these players around, as Florida State has lost its top four scorers from this past season’s Sweet 16 team.

Before coming to Kentucky, Flecther was known for being a quality defender that can slash and score. The Wildcats may not have been the best fit, as the four-star prospect needs more time to develop rather than being a “one and done” pro prospect. Coach Leonard Hamilton is one of the best and has been sending multiple players to the NBA without having to score 15+ ppg on over 30 mpg.

This stop could very well end up being the best move ever for Fletcher. But he’ll have to earn his spot in the rotation. Polite will likely start at either the shooting guard or small forward position while Calhoun, Cleveland, and Fletcher will battle it out for minutes on the perimeter. The former Wildcat can also play at the undersized power forward spot behind Osborne too.

Next. 10 early transfer winners so far this offseason. dark

Florida State may not have a clear 15+ ppg star scorer on its roster right now but they have plenty of talent from 1-10 on its projected depth chart. Fletcher and his versatility will be part of that for next season. How big a role will be determined for the future.
