Florida Basketball taking advantage of transfer portal this 2021 offseason
How do the new guys fit in?
Mike White’s roster got a big boost when Keyontae Johnson announced he was returning to Florida. How much the SEC Player of the Year caliber forward plays is irrelevant, just the fact that he is back playing will give the Gators an emotional lift.
Last season Florida had no seniors, and for a team that was one possession away from the Sweet Sixteen, the roster is made for a deep run. While having to replace the likes of Mann, Lewis, and Locke hurt, the roster is still in good shape. The talent White has brought in has the potential to not only replace those lost but make the Gators even better.
Felder is the lone forward of the group and should give the team an even bigger frontcourt presence than they had with Payne. With a similar build the 6-7 Felder should slide right into the frontcourt next to Castleton, should he return.
Mann and Locke were the two best perimeter shooters on the roster last season, but the additions of a volume shooter like Fleming, Jr. and a deep threat in Jones, both of whom led their respective teams in scoring last season, should give opponents a headache most nights
. Add to those two, another guy who led his team in scoring shot over 50% from the field and nearly 43% from deep in Brandon McKissic, and Florida should improve on their 36% three-point shooting from a year ago. Don’t be surprised if the long ball becomes more of a weapon next season.
Coach White has used the portal to his utmost advantage and because of that, his team is positioned to contend in the SEC and beyond.
