SEC Basketball: Biggest roster needs for each team for 2021-22 season
By Matt Melton
South Carolina Gamecocks
Biggest Need: Star Player
The Gamecocks had a disappointing 2020-21 season but will return virtually a majority of their team from last season. South Carolina has also added two notable transfer guards in Washington transfer Erik Stevenson and North Texas transfer James Reese.
While the roster looks almost complete for next season, the Gamecocks could benefit from adding a star transfer to lead the way alongside Lawson, Couisnard, and Bryant. South Carolina will most likely look similar to Missouri in 2020-21 roster wise based on experience alone and could benefit from adding a star. Frank Martin’s Gamecocks could already be set for a big bounce-back in 2021-22, but could it be even bigger with a potential addition of a star?
Tennessee Volunteers
Biggest Need: Forward Depth
The Volunteers will lose a few key pieces off of last season’s NCAA Tournament caliber team but have re-loaded. Partly combined with returns and incoming talented recruits and transfers, Tennessee will once again be around the top of the SEC next season.
Tennessee also got a massive bump to their 2021-22 roster when senior forward John Fulkerson announced his decision to return to Knoxville to utilize his extra year of eligibility but is also where their biggest need comes into play. The Volunteers struggled to replace Fulkerson late last season when the senior went down with an injury, which is why adding an experienced depth piece to back up Fulkerson is arguably the biggest remaining need for a talented Tennessee team.
