The phrase “blueblood” is used in many different settings and although the system to determine a blueblood is straightforward, there are schools that have had success in one area while slacking in others.

For schools like Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky, their status of being a blueblood program comes through the regular season, NCAA Tournament, and NBA Draft success.

Older programs that have not had the success of late, that are considered bluebloods are Indiana, Louisville, and prior to making the final four, UCLA has been on a downward trajectory.

However, there are programs that do not fit the bill in totality, with new programs like Villanova, Virginia, and Gonzaga. With having NCAA Tournament success, the NBA success has not quite translated.

One of the new teams that can make the case of blueblood status in the future, especially after the season they just had is Baylor Basketball. The Bears are coming off their first national championship and was ranked No. 1 for the third time in the previous five seasons.

Nearly one month ago, College Basketball added a new national champion to the record books, with Baylor’s 16-point win over Gonzaga.

Baylor is coming off another 18+ win season, the last time the Bears didn’t match that win total was 2006-2007. Even the best of blue bloods in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Duke have had seasons of less than 18 wins during that time span.

With the amount of recent success being at an elite level, it’s time to give Baylor their rightful dues and in consideration to be College Basketball’s next blue blood.
