G Trey Alexander – No. 71 overall prospect

Teams involved: Oklahoma, Oregon, and Arizona

Whether it was a miscommunication or being upset by multiple guard transfers coming in, Alexander opted to leave Auburn this offseason. The 6’4 prospect is a natural shooting guard that also has ball-handling skills to play on the ball as well. He’s a top-100 recruit but not at the level of a Washington or Hickman, so he’s not likely to start depending on the location.

However, Alexander will be sought after as a multi-year prospect with great scoring potential. The issue right now is that he’ll have to wait to see how the transfer portal and NBA Draft news break out so that he can pick the right situation and avoid being in a crowded backcourt. So there’s a real chance that he’ll be the last top-100 prospect in the 2021 class to make a decision, even around June to truly decide.

Two teams that have been linked so far have been Oregon and Oklahoma. The Ducks currently have just three guards on the roster, including returning starter Will Richardson, Oklahoma transfer De’Vion Harmon, and JUCO All-American newcomer Rivaldo Soares. They still need some more depth and it’ll be hard to get that via the transfer portal. However, it could be very appealing for a prospect like Alexander to be the first guard off the bench, especially since he’s capable of handling the ball as well. He’d be a big piece for Oregon to land to have some real depth.

As for the Sooners and new head coach Porter Moser, he’s looking towards the future and making sure he has a competitive roster for this and next season. His starting backcourt is expected to include a trio of seniors in Jordan Goldwire, Elijah Harkless, and Umoja Gibson. Alexander wouldn’t have a huge role as a freshman but he certainly would the year after and would be able to play close to home in the state.

It may come down to these two and some darkhorse candidates but Oklahoma is a very interesting option. They’re rumored to be targeting former five-star Kansas player Bryce Thompson but if they don’t land him, look for Alexander to be the top option.

Prediction: Oklahoma
