NCAA Basketball: Way-too-early hot seat power rankings for 2021-22
It should come as no surprise that the 2021 offseason – fresh off the heels of, arguably, the most tumultuous season in NCAA Basketball history – has produced an unpredictable string of events. Spurred by teams swapping conferences, the seemingly endless transfer portal, and a coaching carousel that has even claimed legends, the 2021 offseason has already, just halfway through the month of May, been historic.
Across the 2020-21 season and into the offseason, at least 55 different Div. I head coaching jobs have come open, with a few still waiting to be filled. In the Power 7 conferences, 13 coaches have either left or retired – including two legends in North Carolina’s Roy Williams and Oklahoma’s Lon Kruger – and premier programs will now move forward with either optimistic or uncertain futures.
The same is true for those at the mid-major level, where some titans – both coaches and programs – loom and await long-sought-after success. Others have faltered under national expectations and failed to live up. With the college basketball landscape undergoing one of its most unique periods ever, the opportunity for these coaches and teams to break through is there – and it may be the last for many of them.
A handful of the coaches here are those who led teams that went from ranked to struggling to string together a winning season – while others endured some of their worst campaigns as a head coach. With the coaching carousel, for all intents and purposes, over, these coaches will have another shot at redemption – and potentially save their spot at their institutions.
These are the top 10 major, household-name coaches who are currently the hottest names on the seat heading into the 2021 offseason – and, should they remain there throughout the summer, into the 2021-22 season.
