There certainly can be a debate as to who the best NCAA Basketball player is in the transfer portal this offseason but my personal take would be sophomore center Tre Mitchell from the UMass Minutemen. He was one of the first marquee players to enter this offseason and over a month later, he remained.

Mitchell was a former top-100 overall prospect from the Pittsburgh area that played his high school at the Woodstock Academy in Connecticut. Despite having plenty of national offers to choose from, the 6’9 and 240-pound big man made the decision to play for the UMass Minutemen in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Mitchell came out in a major way as a freshman, averaging 17.7 ppg and 7.2 rpg in 31 games and 31 starts. The A-10 Rookie of the Year was in double figures in all but two games and ended the season with 34 points and 12 rebounds against Rhode Island.

Mitchell played in just 13 games this past season for the Minutemen but still put up some gaudy numbers when available, putting up 18.8 ppg and 7.2 rpg, including a career-high 37 points at La Salle and 30 in the conference tournament against Saint Louis.

Once the season was over, Mitchell made the decision to enter the transfer portal and immediately became highly sought after. However, it took a while to get any traction as to which teams were truly involved in his new recruitment. But now, we know the teams.

We’re down to six programs in consideration for Mitchell, including a surprise option too. Here’s a closer look at how the former A-10 star would fit with each of these options.
