NCAA Basketball: Updated way-too-early top 25 rankings for 2021-22 season
We are coming off the most bizarre NCAA Basketball season of all time. Team’s playing in front of no fans, blue blood programs missing the tournament, and transfers getting eligibility halfway through the year are just to name a few. And this offseason continued the trend.
So far over 1,600 players have entered their names into the transfer portal. Some are using their “free” year to go onto another program for more playing time or to be on a contender. We saw a ton of guys reenter back into the portal from last year. Last offseason guys had to meet potential head coaches on zoom and maybe the fit just wasn’t right. Even top players in the county including Remy Martin and Tre Mitchell entered into the portal, something we college basketball fans are not accustomed to.
Similar to the transfer portal, we saw a fair amount of coaching movement as well. Most notably is probably Chris Beard going from Texas Tech to Texas. The simple reason why there was so much coaching movement is most likely athletic directors didn’t want to have to search for a coach during a pandemic and gave coaches another shot. Some took advantage of the second chance like Wayne Tinkle from Oregon State. Others like Shaka Smart not so much.
With so many moving paces, these rankings will be updated every week. Seems as if every other day another major piece either enters his name into the portal or decides where he is going to go. Making the rankings change. For us die-hard basketball fans it different, but gives us a reason to talk about college hoops in the middle of May.
