NCAA Basketball: Analyzing the 7 options for 2022 five-star PG Bryce Griggs
Memphis Tigers
Head coach Penny Hardaway’s recruiting connections continue to get him and Memphis in the picture of top prospects but the success rate hasn’t been as high. Part of it may be that they play in the American Athletic Conference but unlike Houston, there hasn’t been much success for the program as of late. And after five-star big man Moussa Cisse departed, there may be some developmental concerns for players there.
What the Tigers do have to offer Griggs is maximum playing time. Leading passer Alex Lomax will be gone after next year, along with key guards Landers Nolley and potentially Lester Quinones. The team does have a pair of guard commits in the 2022 class currently but neither of them is near the talent level of Griggs. But it’s hard seeing how Memphis will win out compared to the more local options without a proven track record of success.
Texas Longhorns
New head coach Chris Beard has rebuilt the frontcourt this offseason but gets to benefit from a trio of returning senior guards in Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones, and Jase Febres. And joining them in the backcourt is Devin Askew, a former five-star prospect that struggled and transferred from Kentucky. Assuming that the seniors are gone, it’ll be wide open for Griggs to come in and have a major role for the Longhorns.
Texas has been swinging for major class of 2022 prospects in the past month, including offering No. 1 overall recruit Emoni Bates. They’re a finalist for several other five-star prospects as well but it’s too early to tell which the coaching staff is truly going to prioritize. If there’s a feeling that Griggs is wide open, he should be the one Texas goes hardest after, especially if they can keep him out of the hands of both Baylor and Kansas.
