NCAA Basketball: 8 teams that should target Arizona State transfer Alonzo Verge Jr.
A couple of years ago, the Arizona State Sun Devils got the commitment from Alonzo Verge Jr. He wasn’t a high school pickup or from the NCAA Basketball transfer portal but rather as a Junior College import. The 6’5 shooting guard was a star at Moberly Area Community College, scoring around 20 ppg and being named a JUCO All-American.
He was viewed as one of the top JUCO transfers for the following season and Verge proved that in a big way. Mainly coming off the bench, the junior averaged 14.6 ppg in just 27 mpg, including a career-high 43 points on 18/29 shooting against Saint Mary’s and reaching double figures in 12 of the last 13 games of the 2019-20 campaign.
Verge was elevated to the starting lineup this past season and his overall numbers were similar. He averaged 14.0 ppg and 3.8 apg, albeit the shooting percentage took a dip to 39%. On a positive note, Verge did improve his three-point shooting to 33% compared to 29% the year prior, while also improving as both a passer and free throw shooter.
Things ultimately didn’t work out for the Sun Devils as a team last season and with the incoming transfers changing up the roster, both Verge and backcourt mate Remy Martin each decided to enter the transfer portal.
It’s certainly not a done deal that the former JUCO star will come back to college. Verge entered the NBA Draft and could be looking at a pro deal but with the extra year available by the NCAA, it makes sense to keep all options open.
Here’s a look at some NCAA Basketball programs that could use Verge if he opts to come back for one more year.
