Gonzaga Basketball: Why the 2021-22 Bulldogs will be even better than last season
By Bryan Mauro
I, like many others, had Gonzaga Basketball as the best team in the country all year last season and had no worries about them heading into the tournament. They made the finals and ran into a team that I grossly underrated in the Baylor Bears. Baylor was the National Champion and the Bulldogs were the runner-up. Those are facts but that also doesn’t mean that Gonzaga was not one of the historically great teams in the history of College Basketball.
Last year Gonzaga was one of seven teams to enter the NCAA tournament undefeated and they beat Kansas, Iowa, West Virginia, Virginia, BYU three times, USC, Oklahoma, Creighton, and UCLA before the showdown with Baylor in the National Championship game. Gonzaga had one of the most efficient offenses of all time, led the country in points per game, and will potentially have two lottery picks come out of it.
Gonzaga absolutely does not fit into the narrative of a team who is only undefeated because of the conference they play in. They were one of the top two teams all year long and have earned everything they have received.
Last year’s team is going to be remembered for a lot of things but the championship still eludes them. As good as last year’s team was dare I say that the 2021-2022 Gonzaga men’s basketball team is going to be better than last year’s season and this season’s team is the school’s best chance at a national championship.
The Bulldogs are going to be the consensus preseason No. 1 team and it is going to be with good reason. Here are the reasons why this year’s Gonzaga team will be better than the last.
