Duke Basketball: End of an era – Coach K to retire after 2021-22 season
We knew it was bound to happen at some point, some might not have thought it was going to come this soon, but Duke Basketball Head Coach, Mike Krzyzewski has decided he will be retiring after the 2021-22 season. Krzyzewski has the most wins of any college basketball coach ever, sitting at 1,170 entering his final season, 1,084 of them coming at Duke, which is the most of any coach at a single school.
In addition to winning 1,170 games all-time, Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to 35 NCAA Tournament appearances (most by a single coach), winning 97 games in the NCAA Tournament (most in NCAA history), 12 Final Four Appearances (tied for the most in NCAA history), and five National Championships.
Coach K has also led Duke to 12 ACC regular-season championships, and 15 ACC tournament championships (most in conference history). Coach K has also been named the National Coach of the Year 12 times, he has coached 67 NBA Draft Picks, including 41 first-round picks, and 28 lottery picks, which is the most in draft history.
All-in-all, Coach K is in a league of his own when it comes to comparing coaches at any level, let alone the college level. Coach K has done things no other coach has even come near, and that is why he is referred to by most as the Greatest of All Time.
Coach K took Duke from a program that had made the NCAA Tournament only eight times, and the Final Four, four times, to a nationally feared powerhouse in college basketball who is always expected to be good, and is always expected to have the best players in college basketball as well.
However, Coach K hasn’t just done amazing things for Duke, he was the head coach of the USA National team where he led the team to gold medals at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, 2008 Olympics, 2010 FIBA World Championship, 2012 Olympics, and 2014 FIBA World Cup and also a bronze medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. As the head coach of the USA National Team, Coach K held an out-of-this-world record, of 75-1.
This is devastating news for Duke Men’s Basketball and their fans, but the good news for them is they still have one more season with the legendary coach, in which they will enter the season undoubtedly in the Top-10.
