NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Ranking 11 contenders for top-20 Sadraque Nganga
10. Saint Mary’s Gaels
After seeing WCC rival Gonzaga land several five-star prospects recently, the Gaels are trying to go a similar route. Playing in a small league under a head coach like Randy Bennett could help maximize Nganga’s potential at a pace that fits the player. He’d be the top offensive option for the team and could put up massive numbers, similar to former WCC Player of the Year Jock Landale.
The issue simply is that Saint Mary’s is just not getting a five-star recruit unless he’s related to one of the coaches. And even then, it would have to be Coach Bennett himself that seals the deal. Playing for a program in a 1-2 bid league that also has the likely back-to-back preseason No. 1 team Gonzaga just doesn’t have much upside. And if Nganga is that interested in the Bulldogs anyway, he should just get recruited by them straight up.
9. Arizona State Sun Devils
A potential local option, the Sun Devils do have a fair amount of playing time to offer after having little frontcourt production this past season. Top-40 big man Enoch Boakye will be at center, while JUCO transfer Alonzo Gaffney and Kimani Lawrence will handle the four-spot.
The reason why I’m not as high on Arizona State as an option for Nganga is based on how last season went. Five-star freshman guard Joshua Christopher did not have a great campaign and the chemistry overall was bad, which is why there was such a roster overhaul. And while I doubt head coach Bobby Hurley is on any hot seat, another bad year could heat things up. For a prospect such as Nganga that may need special development due to how raw he is, ASU may not be the best option.
