NCAA Basketball rewind: Most impactful coaching hires after 2013 season
By Joey Loose
7. Casey Alexander (Lipscomb)
Lipscomb was still a relatively fresh program to D1 athletics by the time 2013 rolled around. They were needing to replace longtime head coach Scott Sanderson, meaning this was their first head coaching search since joining D1. This A-Sun program needed a jumpstart, and they hired the right guy to trigger it.
Lipscomb turned their attention towards Casey Alexander, a coach who had plenty of experience in the Nashville area. He had spent nearly two decades as a player and assistant coach under Rick Byrd at Belmont, just a few miles from Lipscomb. He had then gained valuable head coaching experience, spending two years leading a turnaround at Stetson, a fellow member of the A-Sun.
The hiring of Alexander did provide a similar great turnaround with the Bisons. After three rebuilding seasons, he led Lipscomb to 20 wins and a second place finish in 2017. He followed that up with the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance the following season and a magical trip to the NIT championship game in 2019. Alexander impressed and wound up as the next head coach in Belmont; though it’s impossible to question what he did with the Bisons.
