It looked as if the NCAA Basketball transfer portal has all but died down when it comes to impact players entering. July 1st is the deadline for players to enter and still be eligible to play next season without having to sit out, just a few days away. But unexpectedly, we got a major name becoming a new free agent in Dawson Garcia.

The 6’11 forward is currently deep in the NBA Draft process, potentially in a position to get selected but far from a guarantee to be a 1st rounder. A big part of why Garcia may have entered the portal this late is to examine all potential options after losing his head coach Steve  Wojciechowski this offseason at Marquette. Former Texas head coach Shaka Smart is the replacement but as we’ve seen with transfers enter the portal once a head coaching change occurs.

Garcia is a former top-30 recruit in last year’s recruiting class. And he proved to be the team’s best player, leading the Golden Eagles in scoring (13.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg) in 27 starts. He shot 48% from the field and 36% from three-point range. The big man had five games of 10+ rebounds and had a season-high 28 points at Villanova. His best performance arguably came against North Carolina going for 24 points and 11 rebounds late in the season.

Garcia has high potential and can be an all-conference star if he chooses to play somewhere else. While many teams have already landed big men this offseason, there are several power conference programs that could still use a starting-caliber frontcourt piece.

The Marquette forward could still return to the Big East program or stay in the 2021 NBA Draft but if he becomes a true free agent, here are eight programs to watch.
