NCAA Basketball: 8 teams that should target Marquette transfer Dawson Garcia
Georgetown Hoyas
Head coach and former NBA star center Patrick Ewing have done a good job with the development of Hoya big men, including Omer Yurtseven and All-Big East center Qudus Wahab, who transferred to Maryland this offseason. Four-star freshman center Ryan Mutombo and 7’0 reserve Timothy Igohoefe are currently set to get minutes at the five-spot but neither is proven.
After losing so much production from last season’s roster, Garcia would have the chance to come in and be the focal point of Georgetown’s offense, while playing for a man with NBA experience and a proven track record. If he plans on staying for just one more year before going pro, the Hoyas would be a solid option that would allow him to accomplish what he wants.
Memphis Tigers
Along with Indiana, Marquette, and Minnesota, the Tigers were a finalist for Garcia in the first go-around. But after missing out on him, head coach Penny Hardaway was able to get five-star prospect Moussa Cisse at center. But he entered the portal earlier this offseason too, leaving Malcolm Dandridge or forward Deandre Williams as the projected starting five-man next season.
Garcia would give them a true center to balance out the lineup and with Landers Nolley and Lester Quinones returning, will have a solid core of guards to work with. The connection made with the coaching staff could work in Memphis favor this time around and there’s no question that they need a center. This is a program known for getting big names late in the offseason and could do the same with Garcia.
