Tennessee Basketball: Vols land commitment from 4-star PG BJ Edwards
By Matt Melton
After a phenomenal offseason to build momentum going into the 2021-22 season, Tennessee Basketball you could argue is one of the hottest teams in the SEC without even playing a game.
After finishing last season with a disappointing season-ending loss to Oregon State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, Tennessee Basketball had to have a good summer. While the Volunteers were set to lose a few notable players to the NBA including Keon Johnson, Jaden Springer, and Yves Pons, Tennessee was set to bring in talent as well to add to what was already there.
Returning talent such as Santiago Vescovi and Josiah-Jordan James were already set for head coach Rick Barnes, while incoming 5-star guard Kennedy Chandler, Auburn transfer Justin Powell, and more quickly turned Tennessee into an SEC contender once again. With the talent already evident, the Volunteers still needed to add, which as you know by now, they did.
The Volunteers began the offseason momentum with the news of senior John Fulkerson announcing his intentions to return to Knoxville, along with an addition of reclassified 5-star forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield. Finishing with a Top 5 2021 recruiting class, Tennessee has now turned its attention to 2022 already securing its first commit.
That came on Thursday afternoon as the Volunteers secured a commit from 4-star point guard BJ Edwards.
A Knoxville, TN native, Edwards is rated as the No. 108 player nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, the No. 68 player nationally according to the Top247, and is among the Top 15 point guards in the country. Attending Knoxville Catholic, Edwards is also ranked as the No. 4 player in the state of Tennessee.
The 6’3 guard is also considered an excellent facilitator with the ball, as well as a strong rebounder and defender for his position. While he is a capable jump-shooter, Edwards strength comes from driving the ball and finishing through contact.
When looking ahead to his future outlook with the Volunteers, Edwards will be a candidate to take over as Tennessee’s point guard during the 2022-23 season. After landing a phenomenal 2021 recruiting class, it certainly appears Tennessee is off to a fast start in 2022 by landing one of the top point guards in the country.
