NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top 4 options for transfer guard Marcus Carr
The saga of All-Big Ten guard and Minnesota star Marcus Carr has gone through several twists and turns this offseason. After the completion of the season, the Gophers fired head coach Richard Pitino and replaced him with Ben Johnson. That move caused just about the entire roster to enter the NCAA Basketball transfer portal, including Carr.
The elite playmaking guard also decided to enter the NBA Draft, after spending four years in college. Carr can score at a high level and is capable of being a good passer and facilitator, but poor shot selection and efficiency (career 39% from the field), average three-point shooting, and at times, poor defense and effort, makes him far from a lock of getting drafted in a few weeks.
But after reportedly deciding to stay in the draft, Carr was figured to be done with NCAA Basketball, leaving teams looking for a point guard to venture elsewhere in the transfer portal and among the remaining high school senior free agents.
Yet in this past week, the former Gopher guard officially left the draft process and intends to play in college next season. And now we have a group of teams officially in the mix to land him.
Technically speaking, all four teams involved have a point guard that’s capable of starting and playing well next season. Yet an argument certainly can be made that Carr is an upgrade overall all of them, especially on the offensive end.
So who will get one of the best offseason free agents? Here’s a closer look at how Carr would fit with each of the four contenders.
