NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top 10 options for top-100 Cam Whitmore
Penn State Nittany Lions
The Nittany Lions are rebuilding under new head coach Micah Shrewsbury and hopes the earlier visit from a month ago gives them a potential edge in the recruiting battle. While this is a team that will have to get out of the Big Ten basement, they offer Whitmore the chance to be a focal point of the offense early on and often.
The team does have junior forward Seth Lundy and JUCO transfer wing Jevonnie Scott but remains in big need of scoring production, especially if Siena transfer Jalen Pickett leaves after next season. This option simply comes down to how much Whitmore wants to play early on, compared to the potential of winning and making the NCAA Tournament.
Villanova Wildcats
The Wildcats have been running a three-guard offense for the past couple of years, with Caleb Daniels and Justin Moore playing a lot at the three-spot. Brandon Slater is the only true veteran wing on the roster, although they have four-star wing Jordan Logino coming in. Of course, Whitmore could find a way to get minutes as well, and considering how much production the team is likely losing next offseason, he would be needed to come in and produce.
Whitmore would be joining one of the more consistent and top-level programs in the country, making the NCAA Tournament every year as a high seed. While playing time wouldn’t be automatic early on at Villanova, the top-50 prospect would be playing deep into March, and with the developmental history of head coach Jay Wright, could turn Whitmore into another NBA Draft prospect for the program.
