BYU Basketball: Caleb Lohner – from the Lone Star State to star in the WCC
Lohner remembers playing basketball very early
Like many athletes that play college basketball, his earliest memories of the sport are a combination of a time with friends and his family. Growing up in Texas, Caleb told me, “Young as I can remember, playing mini hoop as a kid when I was three and four years old.”
He also has very fond memories of the time he spent with his dad that revolved around basketball. His dad Matt is a familiar name to Cougar fans having played in Provo from 1991-1996 with religious mission sandwiched in between his time on the floor. About his dad, Caleb remembers, “My dad I looked up to my dad in so many ways, hard-working dude. He was always there coming with me to the gym before the sun was up, rebounding trying to help me any way he could.”
His father was a big influence on him growing up, both on and off the court with Matt having played at the Division I level. As a kid Caleb was a big fan of the Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki, witnessing them win the NBA title in 2011, he says, “I was a big Dirk Nowitzki fan, I grew up in Dallas I was a big Mavericks fan.”
