Texas Tech Basketball: Key remaining offseason questions heading into 2021-22

Today we begin a new series centered around the fans. Each month, I will gather three questions from Texas Tech Basketball fans on Twitter and answer them here. In this month’s edition, we will go over the point guard position, who the Red Raiders are currently targeting on the recruiting trail, and if I think Texas Tech is a top-3 team in the Big 12. Buckle up and enjoy!

(@hasbeenssports) – “Who is the point guard and how many scholarships are left?”

Mark Adams has been able to assemble his dream roster thus far for Texas Tech. Take a quick look at the depth chart and you’ll find an abundance of 6’6+ guys that are athletic, long, & can guard multiple positions on defense. That said, The guard position is without a doubt the biggest question mark for the talented Texas Tech squad.

I’d keep an eye on Mylik Wilson to be the starting point guard for Texas Tech next season. The 6’3 Louisiana transfer is more than capable of stepping in and taking over Kyler Edward’s previous role. At Louisiana, Wilson was stuck behind one of the best guards in the Sun Belt Conference in Cedric Russell.

Even with Russell leading the Cajuns’ backcourt, Wilson was still able to put up solid numbers averaging 12.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. In just two years, Wilson has racked up some impressive accolades including being named a Kyle Macy Freshman-All American, winning a Sunbelt Conference Freshman of the Year award, and was the Cajuns’ 2nd leading scorer last season as a sophomore.

Wilson is one of the better defending guards Texas Tech has had in recent years and shows promising signs as a ball distributor. He’s also a much better athlete than people may realize and can punish the rim when he wants. Overall, I’d like to see Wilson get back in range of his freshman shooting numbers (35% 3-pt) after struggling last season & fully embrace the role as a lead facilitator.

You can also look for guys like Kevin McCullar, Clarence Nadolny, Davion Warren, & Sardaar Calhoun to get some looks at the point guard spot.

  • Confirmed Scholarship: Terrence Shannon Jr, Kevin McCullar, Davion Warren, Clarence Nadolny, Mylik Wilson, KJ Allen, Chibuzo Agbo, Daniel Batcho, Sardaar Calhoun, Adonis Arms, Bryson Williams = 11
  • Does not count against scholarship count: Marcus Santos-Silva
  • Ethan Duncan is believed to be on an academic scholarship for now
  • That leaves Texas Tech with two scholarships
