Atlantic Sun Basketball: In-depth look at Eastern Kentucky star Jomaru Brown
By Bryan Mauro
Expectations for Jomaru Brown in 2021-22 season
Eastern Kentucky averaged 82 points per game last year and more than made up for the loss of Brown. This season though the offense may take a step back as the Colonels lost three of their top scorers to transfer. Eastern Kentucky does have Brown and some others who are ready to take the team through the first year of transition into the Atlantic Sun.
Even with the players lost to transfer head coach AW Hamilton and his style will lead to a ton of points being put up. Since he has been the head coach the Colonels have been in the top 75 in scoring each year. Nothing points to that not being the case this season as well.
Brown is going to be one of the front runners for the Atlantic Sun player of the year. It is all going to hinge on how fast he returns from his shoulder injury. He is a full go for the year but how must rust he has to shake off, will be a factor early in the season.
Once conference play starts Brown and his Eastern Kentucky teammates should be rolling and ready to take on some new competition in the Atlantic Sun. Even if Brown doesn’t win the player of the year in the conference, he is definitely going to make all-conference and is likely going to test the NBA waters again like he did at the end of the 2020 season. Brown has the skillset to play in the NBA.
Eastern Kentucky does have a high-powered offense but there are some teams in their new conference who focus completely on defense. Liberty, Bellarmine, and Lipscomb are the teams who are likely going to have the guys who can slow down this offense a little bit. Those three teams also happen to be some of the top teams in the league.
If the shots are falling Eastern Kentucky can beat anyone, but in order to reach their ceiling, they are going to need to have Brown quickly get back to his 2019-2020 form.
