NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Ranking 6 options for four-star forward Alphonzo Billups
2. Texas A&M Aggies
One of the best players in the SEC last season was Emanuel Miller, a 6’7 forward who led Texas A&M with 16.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg. But he transferred out to TCU this offseason, leaving a giant hole of production for the team to recover. They did land a couple of transfers, including power forwards, Henry Coleman, and Ethan Henderson.
The obvious selling point here is that there isn’t a true wing on the current roster for the Aggies, which could potentially allow Billups to come in and get immediate playing time. But if the team continues to struggle and isn’t anywhere near an NCAA Tournament team, could head coach Buzz Williams end up on the hot seat?
1. VCU Rams
The “hometown” option among the contenders, VCU has been a consistent top-50 program in NCAA Basketball and a top-tier in the Atlantic 10. They also just had star guard Nah’Shon Hyland get drafted in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft, another boost for recruiting purposes.
The Rams certainly could use a top-100 talent like Billups, who would come in early on and be a focal point of the offense. While his stock has risen up, there’s always a chance that Billups could get over-recruited and be forced to transfer down in the future. VCU is not only the safest option of the group but also would allow the wing to develop into a potential NBA prospect of his own.
