NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts heading into 2021-22 season
24. Richmond Spiders
Richmond is going to be one of the oldest teams in the country next season, thanks to a projected lineup that should feature five 5th-year seniors. But they’ll have to make do without leading scorer Blake Francis, whose arrival to the program sparked a turnaround into being a top-tier Atlantic 10 team.
But what helps is having a true frontcourt that features three quality players that each brings something different to the table. Starting with center Grant Golden, a 6’11 big man that averaged 12.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg last season. But an underrated part of his game is his passing ability, coming off a career-high 3.5 apg as well.
6’9 power forward Nathan Cayo is as consistent as they come, averaging 12.2 ppg and 4.4 rpg. He can play and guard multiple positions on the court and can backup Golden at the five-spot when needed. And there’s also Tyler Burton, another double-digit scorer who led the Spiders with 7.6 rpg. The 6’7 combo forward was inserted into the starting lineup when Nick Sherod suffered a season-ending injury and although he’s back, will likely move to the two-spot while Burton stays on the wing.
If fellow seniors Matt Grace and Souleymane Koureissi can provide a little more off the bench to prevent a drop-off, Richmond should be in a position to not only compete for an at-large bid but also go against St. Bonaventure for the Atlantic 10 regular-season crown.
