Big South Basketball was in the news a lot last year as the Winthrop Eagles almost completed the season undefeated and headed to the NCAA tournament in which they were a trendy upset pick. Winthrop did end up losing their opening round game to Villanova but they kept the conference relevant all year.

The Big South, like so many other mid-major conferences, was not short on star power. Winthrop had one of the best players in the country in Chandler Vaudrin, USC Upstate had Tommy Bruner, Gardner Webb had Jaheam Cornwall.

Conference bottom dweller in Charleston Southern had a player who could have played for any team in the country in Phlandrous Fleming. The conference runner-up, the Campbell Camels have the best returning player in the conference in Cedric Henderson Jr.

While the league is not short on star power only two teams with Campbell and Winthrop are the most competitive teams are the two teams who are likely going to be at or near the top all season. Campbell is no stranger to having the best player in the Big South. Chris Clemons may ring a bell for the diehard college basketball fans as he led the nation in scoring for a good portion of his career and led the basketball resurgence at Campbell of the last handful of years.

Henderson Jr. heads into his senior year at Campbell hoping to lead his team back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 1991-1992 season. Head coach Kevin McGeehan has done a tremendous job and last year he was able to guide his team to the Big South conference tournament final with a largely unheralded roster.  This year with a ton of experience returning, it has the makings of a very special year in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
