Baylor Basketball: Projected starting lineup and depth chart for 2021-22 season
By Andrew Tineo
Power Forward
Starter: Kendall Brown
The decorated five-star from Sunrise Christian is the fifth-highest ranked recruit in Baylor history and brings the same intangibles that Mayer has.
Brown has excellent athleticism for his height and can slash to the bucket well at 6-foot-8. Brown will be one of Baylor’s better defenders and has room for growth within his consistent shot.
The question mark will be how Drew sets his system around Brown, as I don’t expect Brown or Mayer to come off the bench. Whether it’s technically small forward or power forward will be up to Drew.
Mayer played in stretches at power forward, when the Bears went to a three-guard lineup last season. With Mayer’s ability to stretch the floor more, I expect him to play more of the three and Brown at the four.
Bench: Dain Dainja/Jeremy Sochan
Although neither has stepped foot in the Ferrell Center, both of them have the potential to be elite players. Dainja used his redshirt, like so many other freshmen previous of him have. Dainja was a four-star recruit out of Minnesota when he committed to the Bears and was vocal off the bench.
Dainja has good size at 6-foot-9, but came in at 260 lbs., and is looking to trim more weight and build up stamina. Dainja is a good passer for his size and is hoping to get minutes for the Bears this season.
Sochan is the third member of the 2021 recruiting class alongside Brown and Love. Sochan however, is not rated as highly and was a part of the Polish national team.
During the Euroleague ANGT this past season, Sochan averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds, and shot 65% from the field, as a 17-year old. His most notable performance came against Romania, with 18 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.
Sochan’s ceiling is one of the best on the roster but will be a redshirt candidate, due to the amount of talent on the roster.
