Kansas Jayhawks

Currently, with the No. 2 overall 2022 class, the Jayhawks are prepared to potentially replace its entire starting lineup after next season. They already have three top-50 commits, including a couple of wings, which may factor into this decision.

Pros

As I mentioned before, head coach Bill Self is one of the safest options a player can go to for both development and potential winning for a season. Kansas is as consistent a program as it comes and has made the NCAA Tournament for 20+ years. Playing in the Big 12 would be a great experience for Mitchell and they’re technically the hometown option for the five-star recruit as well.

Cons

No team is going to not “need” a five-star prospect but Kansas already has one at the small forward position in MJ Rice. The 6’5 playmaker is ranked No. 20 overall so on paper, Mitchell is better. But realistically they’re on the same level and unless one moves to another position on the court, there already would be an issue in the 2022 class that could cause Rice to de-commit. That doesn’t even include top-40 wing Gradey Dick also in the class.

The Jayhawks aren’t going to want to miss out on a local prospect as good as Mitchell but Rice’s commitment may signal that they aren’t confident that they’ll miss out. So there may be a real chance that both sides have moved on and that Rice will be the starting wing for the year after.
