Kansas Basketball: Analyzing Jayhawks 2021 incoming recruiting class
6. KJ Adams
The 6-7 forward is a 4-star recruit who was a consensus top 85 player in the 2021 class. Adams averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists his senior season earning 6A all-state honors for Westlake (Texas) high school this past season.
"“KJ is a jack of all trades, said Self. I think KJ is a big guard that can play inside. He’s definitely strong enough. He’s a physically gifted youngster that can defend the five too. KJ is a guy that can play with the ball in his hands. He can play without the ball. He can be an tremendous physical presence in the game and certainly he is well beyond his years in that regard. I look forward to coaching is versatility.”"
Adams is kind of in a logjam unless he can beat out Clemence and Martin on the depth chart, particularly if the Jayhawks use a traditional lineup and Wilson plays the 3, as Christian Braun is also still on the roster.
5. Cam Martin
The 6-9 forward, a two-time NCAA Division II All-America, will conclude his college career as a Jayhawk after transferring from Missouri Southern, Martin is expected to beef up KU’s frontcourt and adds some versatility to it. He totaled 25.0 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 58% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc last year.
Martin will likely see 10-20 minutes as a reserve big man.
4. Zachary Clemence
The 6-10 forward is very versatile and has the ability to really shoot the ball. Clemence averaged 10.5 points and 5.0 caroms last year for Sunrise Academy, which finished runner-up at the 2021 GEICO high school national championship. He was a consensus top-40 recruit.
Clemence could start at the 3 or 4, depending on whether Self goes with a traditional lineup and where Jalen Wilson plays (3 or 4). More likely, Clemence sees a lot of time as the first big off the bench at both forward positions and center.
