Matt Painter is entering his 17th season at Purdue Basketball and expectations may be as high as they have ever been in West Lafayette. In his previous 16 seasons, the 2018-19 team’s run to the Elite Eight was Painter’s best team to date, but there is a sense that the 2021-22 could be his best team yet.

Purdue is a consensus top-10 team entering the year and for good reason because not only do the Boilermakers return 13 of the 14 players that dented the stat sheet last season, only Aaron Wheeler who transferred to St. John’s has left, but Painter has brought in the 37th ranked recruiting class according to 247sports.

The biggest news for Purdue came during the summer when sophomore Jaden Ivey opened even more eyes helping lead Team USA to a U19 title in Latvia and leading scorer Trevion Williams and his 15.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists decided to return to West Lafayette for his senior season.

Sharpshooter Sasha Stefanovic and 7’4 big man Zach Edey return, as do guards Eric Hunter, Jr. and Brandon Newman in key roles. The recruiting class is headlined by a pair of power forwards Trey Kaufman and Caleb Furst are a pair of top-75 recruits and the top two recruits in the state of Indiana.

For a team that was 10 deep last season, adding two more pieces makes Purdue one of the deepest teams in the country, and people can see why this season could be Matt Painter’s best at Purdue. How does a team that could have 12 players register double-digit minutes shake out a rotation?
