NCAA Basketball: Top 10 “Win Total” bets to avoid for 2021-22 season
By Ian Mumm
6. Baylor Bears: Line = 26.0 Wins
A national championship for Baylor last season completed head coach Scott Drew’s goals and vision when he took over the program prior to the 2003-04 season. The Bears have steadily and consistently improved under his guidance and while regression after losing the team’s top-3 players wouldn’t be surprising the floor isn’t falling out for Baylor anytime soon. Vegas seems to agree as well by setting the line at 26.0 wins and expecting the Bears to at least remain “competitive” in conference play and on the national scene.
Losing their only double-digit scorers from the championship team isn’t ideal, but due to their excellence on the court, the nation really didn’t get to understand the depth and talent that lies further down this roster. Guard Adam Flagler and wing Matthew Mayer stand to take significant steps forward in their offensive responsibilities, as well as production next season alongside Arizona transfer James Akinjo. The team will still maintain a strong interior defensive presence with the return of Flo Thamba and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua as well.
Signing one of the top recruiting classes this offseason as well cannot be undermined. 5-star wing Kendall Brown stands to instantly become a vital part of the rotation and a deep backcourt ensures Coach Drew will find talent ready to contribute on the big stage in 2022. This year’s non-conference schedule is conducive towards slow incorporation of these pieces into a smoothly running machine by the start of conference play.
Understanding this year’s version of the Bears won’t score as furiously as the 2021 team did will be complemented by a likely improved defensive squad. The give and take on one end will help to ensure Baylor can successfully navigate the coming Big-12 onslaught. Don’t overthink the talent on this roster…
