Morehead State Basketball: 2021-22 season preview and outlook for Eagles
2021-22 outlook for Morehead State basketball
Morehead State is a veteran and talented team that plays outstanding defense and they have a legitimate star player. Former Eastern Illinois coach Jay Spoonhour once told me, “to win the OVC you have to have a ‘pro’ on your team.”
The Eagles have a future ‘pro’ in Johni Broome. His two battles with Belmont and Nick Muszynski (January 20 and February 10) will be great theater and go a long way to determining the OVC regular-season championship.
Holdover guards Skyelar Potter and Ta’lon Cooper and Spradlin’s three transfers have proven credentials on both ends of the floor and should provide plenty of firepower to support Broome’s potential ‘player of the year’ type of season.
Among Spradlin’s top priorities is getting his newcomers to understand and to buy into his ‘defense first’ mentality. The full recovery of Tyzhaun Claude’s knee will provide Broome with a capable backup and will give Spradlin the option to ‘play big’ when needed.
An outstanding non-conference schedule will give MSU the opportunity to build a significant N.E.T. ranking to aid in its postseason hopes.
Belmont and Murray State loom as the Eagles’ top competitors for the league championship, and those three teams stand apart from the rest of the conference. There are two fewer teams in the Ohio Valley Conference and three of the remaining ten have new coaches.
While Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Tennessee State, and Tennessee Tech should be improved, the Eagles, Bruins, and Racers will be battling for the OVC’s top spot.
