Power Forward

Starter: Justin Winston (12 mpg)

What makes Winston fairly interesting is the potential mismatches he can create on the offensive end. The 6’8 forward can give Robert Morris some four-out lineups since he can operate from the perimeter and he comes from a strong defensive system at St. Bonaventure. He’s not the greatest scorer but at the Horizon League, Winston can be a double-digit contributor while having an even bigger impact on the defensive end.

Bench: Matt Mayers (20 mpg), Mattia Acunzo (8 mpg)

The one newcomer that could singlehandedly change the outlook for the Colonials is Mayers, a 6’8 forward from Hutchinson Community College. He was one of the best players in all of JUCO Basketball last season, averaging 17.8 ppg and 9.4 rpg last season, including one game with 44 points and 16 rebounds against Cowley, who was one of the better teams all year.

Mayers can stretch the floor a bit but is known for being an outstanding interior scorer. He may not put up the same kind of numbers as Bramah did but the potential is there. And the Horizon League has a good history with former JUCO stars having a major impact out the gate, including  D’Moi Hodge of Cleveland State going for 46 points versus Purdue-Fort Wayne. If Mayers can produce at a double-digit scoring level, he could very well start at some point.

Acunzo averaged 5.9 ppg and 3.5 rpg in 15.0 ppg off the bench at Toledo last season but most importantly, proved that he can be healthy for a team after missing the prior year. At 6’8 and 220 pounds, he adds more depth to the frontcourt. However, the potential emerging of both Winston and Mayers could dent his potential minutes.
