Notre Dame Basketball: Projected starting lineup and depth chart for 2021-22 season
Center
Starter: Paul Atkinson
2019-20 stats: 17.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 63.6% eFG, 31.8 MPG
Paul Atkinson is the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, although technically we are a full season removed from that given the Ivy League’s lack of a basketball season last year.
As a junior, Atkinson ranked in the top 25 nationally in field goal percentage (63.0), effective field goal percentage (63.3), and true shooting percentage (65.1). He averaged 17.6 points and 7.3 boards per game and ranked seventh in offensive rating among players 6″10″ and taller.
Atkinson isn’t known for his defense, but he does bring in an adjusted defensive rating of 93.8. Notre Dame had just one player with a defensive rating under 100.0 last year: Juwan Durham, who is no longer on the team.
Bench: Matt Zona
2020-21 stats: 0.9 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 5.1 MPG, 15 GP
Matt Zona saw limited minutes in 15 games last season, a role that could see a slight increase this season. Physically, he has the ability to be an imposing rebounder, screen setter, and paint protector right away.
Zona has the skill to finish inside and step out to the mid-range. His role this season will be as a limited backup for Atkinson and Laszewski, building towards an impact role starting in 2022-23.
