Atlantic 10 Basketball: 5 key questions and storylines for 2021-22 season
5. Who is the best guard in the conference?
Bernstein
I believe the best guard in the Atlantic 10 Conference is Kyle Lofton. Lofton is going into his senior season with the Bonnies. He has a lot of honors to add to his resume including, the All-Atlantic-10 team twice, the All-Atlantic-10 Tournament team twice, and the Atlantic-10 All-Freshman team. Last season, he lead the Bonnies by averaging 14.4 points per game and 5.5 assists per game. With St. Bonaventure coming into the season as favorites to win, we can expect Lofton to continue his success and push towards the Atlantic-10 Player of the Year award.
Chapley
Kyle Lofton is the top guard until proven otherwise in my books. His vision, handle, and leadership makes him the definitive point guard of a championship team. If he can shoot better from deep than he did last year (24% down from 32% the year prior) he will be a player of the year candidate and almost guaranteed first-teamer.
Cronin
In a two-man race, Kyle Lofton edges out Jacob Gilyard (Javonte Perkins is not a guard). Gilyard is an all-world defender and Lofton an elite passer, but the fact that both are strong at the other’s best skill make those a wash.
The difference becomes Lofton’s crunch-time scoring and his presence as the go-to guy for a Top 25 team. And if Lofton’s three-point shooting improves, he could be in the conversation for the nation’s best guard.
