Big Ten Basketball: 6 behind the scene takeaways from 2021-22 Media Day
By Greg Waddell
6. Tom Izzo is the Godfather of Big Ten Basketball
There are some people whose presence simply overpowers everyone else in the room, and it was captivating to experience that firsthand when Tom Izzo stepped up to the stage Friday morning.
Izzo was unequivocally himself and answered questions like a war veteran who has been some places and seen some things, but survived and came out better for it. Amidst a group of coaches, many young, new or unaccomplished at the Big Ten level, Izzo acted as the overarching voice of the conference, and it’s a role he has earned with his successes over the last three decades.
Izzo was asked how much he has left in the tank, and what’s left on his bucket list. He seemed at first to be almost put off by both questions, but then gave thoughtful, unique answers that only someone who loves the game as much as Izzo could give.
Izzo seems genuinely energized by his roster this year, and it’s not hard to see a turnaround coming for the Spartans this season.
