ACC Basketball: Projecting each team’s key player production for 2021-22
Virginia Tech Hokies: Storm Murphy and Hunter Cattoor
Decrease in production: Storm Murphy
The Graduate Transfer from Wofford averaged 17.8 points per game on his way to being named to the All-Southern First Team, as he led the Terriers to a fourth-place conference finish. As noted earlier, only Matthew Hurt – who led the ACC in scoring- average over 18 points. Regardless of how successful the 6’0 guard was with Wofford, Storm Murphy will not be putting up 2020-21 Justin Champagnie and Buddy Boheim type numbers.
As the clear first option for Wofford, Murphy averaged almost 13 field goals per game. With Virginia Tech, Murphy will be joining Keve Aluma and Nahiem Alleyne in the starting line-up, who will be responsible for the bulk of the Hokies’ scoring. With a thin bench behind him at point guard, Murphy should receive similar playing minutes from head coach Mike Young, yet the offensive stat that needs to increase is the 4.3 assists he averaged last season.
Increase in production: Hunter Cattoor
It has been documented to exhaustion that the Hokies’ backcourt is thin, more so, because Alleyne will be spending time and most likely starting at small forward. With Alleyne playing at the three-spot, 6’3 Hunter Cattoor will be moving from the bench – averaging twenty-two minutes and fewer than nine points – to the starting lineup.
With 72 percent of Cattoor’s shot attempts coming from beyond the arc, he will become the Hokies’ biggest deep threat. Which will lead to additional playing .time
