Horizon League Basketball: In-depth look at Detroit Mercy senior guard Antoine Davis
By Bryan Mauro
Expectations for Antoine Davis in 2021-22
Detroit Mercy has never finished near the top under head coach Mike Davis, but many expect that to change this year. The Titans have a veteran roster of guys who have a ton of experience at the Division 1 level. They love to shoot threes and should score a ton of points. Scoring points has not changed under Coach Davis as the Titans have always been able to score points. It all comes on the defensive end where Detroit Mercy struggles most nights.
It’s really hard to believe that after everything the senior guard Davis has accomplished he has never won the Horizon League player of the year. He will be the favorite for the award going in. It is also a reasonable assumption that the guard is going to push for the nation’s leader in points scored and points per game. His biggest competition for that comes from a player in his own conference.
If Detroit Mercy somehow has a magical season and wins the league, Davis could find himself in the national player of the year conversation but that is a longshot right now. After the year ends the guard is going to find himself playing professionally and likely in the NBA. When you can score as he can, he will have a place in the NBA.
The majority of the time that Davis was in college, the Titans were a one-man show led by Davis. This year that has changed and this roster has been infused with talent. Some of it is homegrown and guys who committed to Detroit out of high school and a lot of it is from the transfer portal.
Noah Waterman is a transfer from Niagara, and he shot over 50% from deep last year. Matt Johnson, a transfer from St. Bonaventure, was also a huge piece to this team a season ago from the bench. Those guys when paired with Davis make for a great trio who is going to score a ton and hopefully win the Titans a bunch of games.
