Arizona Basketball: 2021-22 season preview and outlook for Wildcats
Arizona’s outlook
The Pac-12 has been on an upswing over the past couple of seasons, and now Arizona wants to get in on the action. The excitement should be at a fever pitch in Tucson after moving on from the Sean Miller era. Arizona made one of the best hires of the summer, Tommy Lloyd comes from the staff at Gonzaga and It’s been three years since Arizona made the NCAA Tournament but with the cloud over the program lifting, the Wildcats are looking to end that streak.
The Wildcats have one of the younger rosters in the conference, with a loaded sophomore class that could see multiple players have breakout seasons. Mauthrin is a guy who could really explode in his second season, it wouldn’t surprise if he averaged 15 points and seven rebounds this season.
Another guy I think is really going to blossom under Lloyd is Terry. If Lloyd can get him to stabilize on the offensive end and get him to buy into always contributing on the defensive end with his seven-foot wingspan, he could be in for a solid year. Tubelis could turn into a double-double guy for the Wildcats, and how Kriisa handles the point will be key to Arizona’s highly efficient offense.
Watching this sophomore class grow this season will be fascinating. If everything breaks right, the Wildcats have the potential to be a top-4 team in the Pac-12 and end their tournament drought. Even if things take longer to come together in Lloyd’s first year, there’s too much talent on this roster to finish in the bottom half of the league.
