Robert Morris Basketball: 2021-22 season preview and outlook for Colonials
Robert Morris Basketball projected starting lineup
PG – JR Michael Green
2020-21 stats (at Bryant): 16.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.7 apg
The 5’11 guard had a breakout sophomore campaign last season, second on the team in scoring and getting All-Northeast Conference honors. Green was in double figures in 19 of 21 games played, including a career-high 33 points on 12/16 shooting on the road at UMass. He’s also a capable ball-handler and distributor at the point position but will have to be a good defender in the Horizon League, where there are a number of quality opposing playmakers all around.
SG – SR Rasheem Dunn
2020-21 stats (at St. John’s): 9.4 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.0 apg
The 6’2 guard is familiar with the Colonials during his early days at St. Francis (PA) in the Northeast Conference, where Dunn was an All-Conference performer. His numbers slightly dipped with the Red Storm but he was still a starting-caliber player and double-digit scorer. Dunn isn’t much of a shooter but has a solid mid-range game and can drive to the basket.
Dunn has a chance to be the best player for Robert Morris on both ends of the court and will have his hands full in the Horizon League. While Green is best suited to be the team’s starting point guard, look for this to be a true combo backcourt where both guys can facilitate the offense. And when one is out, the other will be in to lead the team.
SF – SO Kam Farris
2020-21 stats: 8.3 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 0.9 apg
Arguably the biggest bright spot last season was the emergence of Ferris, who started 16 of 17 games as a freshman and shot 46% from three-point range, good for No. 1 in the entire Horizon League in 2020-21. The 6’3 guard could very well be the 6th Man this season but his shooting ability compliments both Dunn and Green well in the backcourt and forces opposing defenses, to be honest when he’s on the court. Whether as a starter or not, Farris will have a big impact on RMU.
PF – SR Kahliel Spear
2020-21 stats: 9.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.2 apg
The 6’7 power forward originally was from Belmont but was a breakout player last season as a frontcourt starter once Bramah left. Despite being a bit undersized, Spear can score inside thanks to his strong post moves and soft touch. There’s more depth and competition inside for the Colonials but the incumbent Spear gets the nod to start.
C – JR Matt Mayer
2020-21 stats (at Hutchinson CC): 17.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 1.2 apg
Mayer is a true low-post scorer from the Junior College ranks, getting all-star honors as one of the better offensive frontcourt players. He has the size at 6’8 and 230 pounds to play the five-spot in the Horizon League and very well could be the best offensive big on the roster for Robert Morris.
