2021-22 season outlook for Robert Morris Basketball

As a basketball program, the Colonials are not as bad as their first season in the Horizon League suggests. But it did make clear that the new conference was a big upgrade talent-wise over the Northeast and this upcoming season may be the best from 1-6 for the Horizon League in terms of individual talent.

That’s both bad news and good news for Robert Morris. The bad news is that they’ll have to deal with Antoine Davis, Patrick Baldwin Jr., Jalen Moore, Trevon Faulkner, and the huge depth of seniors that reside at Cleveland State. However, all of these guys are all but certain to leave after next season, with the schools of these respective players likely going to be taken steps backward. Except for Wright State, whose two best players (Tanner Holden and Grant Basile) are both entering their junior seasons.

Still, this provides a future opportunity for Robert Morris to make a jump up the conference ladder in the very near future. In fact, Cleveland State was picked 7th in the preseason poll last year and ended up 1st in the standings. I’m not saying that’s in the future for the Colonials but don’t expect it to always be Wright State and Northern Kentucky at the very top.

This is an important season for RMU to establish itself as a viable program in the Horizon League. A solid year will have them in contention for transfers, to replace the likes of Rasheem Dunn and Ferron Flavors next offseason who won’t have to fear that they’ll be playing for a bottom-tier team.

There are so many newcomers to this roster that it’s going to take time for things to gel and a real rotation established. But when that happens, Robert Morris Basketball will be in position to make some real noise in the Horizon League and be much more competitive than they were a year ago. They may be in a new league but look for the former Northeast Conference stars (Green and Dunn) to play a big role in this team’s fight to rise up the conference ladder.
