April Headline: Once Viral Sensation Jahvon Quinerly Has Taken Game to New Heights with Tide
Like Mark Williams, Jahvon Quinerly is another 100-1 longshot who stood out to me. I have absolutely loved Quinerly’s game in the times I’ve seen him play. While watching Alabama during the tournament last year, I kept thinking to myself that if he was just a little more polished and better at finishing, he could become the best guard in America. While I hope my stupid observations and thoughts aren’t enough to convince you to break the bank on a Quinerly Naismith bet, I do have at least a little evidence to suggest he’s very good.
Quinerly was a crucial part of Alabama’s success in March. He won MVP honors for the SEC Tournament after leading Alabama to a tightly contested victory in the championship game over LSU. In Alabama’s upset loss in the Sweet 16 to UCLA, Quinerly also put up 20 points to go along with 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Over the course of the season, the transfer emerged as one of the Tide’s top players while averaging 12.9 PPG, 2.2 RPG, and 3.2 APG.
It’s the flashes that Quinerly shows that remind people of his super-high potential, though. He excels at getting to the rim and has a nice repertoire of crafty finishes. On top of being able to get to the rim, he shot 43.3% from behind the arc last season in an Alabama offense that likes to shoot them.
Alabama will have another talented team that will play fast and put-up lots of points. If Quinerly breaks out like he’s shown he can in spurts, he will garner national attention. Improvements in efficiency could bump him into the “best guard in America” conversation and potentially even NPOY consideration. Out of all the electrifying players in college basketball today, Quinerly is one of the players I’m personally most excited to seeing how he’s developed over the offseason.
