Game of the day: The game of the weekend will come Sunday morning in Newark. Seton Hall takes on a very good Yale team enjoying the best stretch in program history. First team All-Ivy selection Azar Swain leads the way for the Bulldogs, draining 93 three-pointers in ’19-20. Yale plays very organized basketball and has a pair of solid defenders. Jalen Gabbidon was named the league’s co-Defensive Player of the Year two years ago and also added six points per contest.

It’s worth reminding everyone that the Ivy League canceled the entire 2020-21 basketball season due to the pandemic, so Yale along with all the other Ivy schools have to kick a bit of rust off. Not playing games for a year and a half could be a big hindrance for the Bulldogs early on.

Seton Hall will attempt to rebound after a disappointing campaign last year. Fortunately, Kevin Willard has a trio of returning starters, one of which is Jared Rhoden (14.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg). Rhoden played a terrific second-fiddle for the Pirates a season ago. A lot of their dependent success will come from whether Jared is able to step into a leading man role effectively.

The Hall added a couple of intriguing transfer guards in Kadary Richmond (Syracuse) and Jamir Harris (American). While Myles Cale and Bryce Aiken both return for their fifth year of eligibility. This game provides an opportunity for Ike Obiagu to insert himself down low against a Yale team that doesn’t have a similar interior presence.

In week one of the college basketball season, the Big East has a few resume-building opportunities. This would be a really nice way for Seton Hall to open the season and win a game that could matter come selection time.
