Location: Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville, TN

In what will be the second consecutive in-state matchup for Tennessee to begin the season, the Volunteers welcome ETSU to Knoxville.

Tennessee opened the 2021-22 season with a 90-62 home win over UT-Martin on Tuesday, a game which was close throughout the first half with the Volunteers pulling away in the second. This was an impressive performance from the No. 18 ranked Volunteers on all fronts, in-particular shooting a phenomenal 42.5% from three (17-for-40).

One of the top defensive teams in the country (rated No. 7 overall in defensive efficiency by KenPom), Tennessee also saw some impressive offensive performances Tuesday headlined by 20-point games from five-star freshman Kennedy Chandler and the returning Santiago Vescovi. In addition to those two, Auburn transfer Justin Powell also added 13 points, while junior forward Olivier Nkamhoua also added a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

ETSU on the other hand did not open their 2021-22 season until Friday night when they suffered a 69-67 road loss to Appalachian State. In a game in which the Buccaneers had a chance to win at the buzzer, ETSU did shoot 41.9% from the field, as well as only committing seven total turnovers.

The Buccaneers did have four players score in double-figures in the contest that included guards David Sloan and Ledarrius Brewer, as well as forwards Ty Brewer and Vonnie Patterson. Those four also compose ETSU’s primary returning scorers from last season, a group that also includes center Silas Adheke.

It was an impressive showing for the Volunteers on Tuesday night in Thompson-Boling, and that should continue here against another in-state opponent. Expect another strong showing from Tennessee’s newcomers such as Chandler and Powell, and for the Volunteers to cruise to win No. 2.
