Murray State Basketball: 3 reasons why Racers are “back” for 2021-22 season
Can Murray State Basketball make the postseason?
Murray State has the look of a team that can do special things. After a one-season mirage of poorer play, the Racers are back. For all of the above reasons, they look like a dangerous Ohio Valley Conference team.
McMahon is one of the best young coaches in America. He recruits players that will work within in their fast-paced, tenacious defense, and play with no fear system and he is a tactician. Layups on in-bounds play out of time-outs were normal to see on Tuesday night.
When Illinois State pushed into contention, McMahon would call a set play from the side-line and an outstanding scoring opportunity would result.
Routinely the OVC is a one-bid league and the Racers will have to battle Belmont and Morehead State for that one bid. They reminded me of the Bruins Tuesday as they made precise cuts, the right pass, smart plays, and timely buckets.
They are more athletic than Belmont and they just might be a bit hungrier. They missed out on postseason play last year and want to reclaim their top spot in a league they have ruled for quite some time.
The OVC post-season tournament is conducted in Evansville, Indiana and the Ford Center has sometimes been nicknamed ‘Murray State North’ because of the way the Racer fan base fills up the arena during the end-of-year tournament.
McMahon’s outstanding guards, balance upfront, and team toughness and togetherness give them an outstanding chance to take back their conference crown.
