What is Saint Mary’s greatest weakness? – Josh Linke (@theZagaholic)

There is a little background to this question. I had written earlier this year when I did my preseason rankings that the Gaels did not have much shooting and the Saint Mary’s fan base was not a fan of that comment and a few of them let me know how wrong I was about the Gaels not having any shooters. The facts are that Saint Mary’s was one of the worst shooting teams in the country a year ago and in addition to that, they were one of the worse offensive teams in the country last year.

This year seems to be a bit different for the Gaels. Saint Mary’s has their injured players back from last year who were their best shooters. That has turned into a shooting percentage from deep of 33% from deep. That still isn’t great but it is much better and is helping the offense immensely. The question did ask what the Gaels biggest weakness was and it is still their shooting.

33% from deep as a team still isn’t great and they have not been the most consistent team shooting the ball. However, if Saint Mary’s can shoot right around 33% from deep for the year they are going to finish top half of the West Coast Conference.

Alex Ducas was hurt for a good portion of last season and he is the team’s three-point shooter. He has already taken 42 attempts from deep in four games. Tommy Kuhse is also currently shooting about 52% from deep and that would be the best number of his career by a lot. Kuhse likely finishes right around 28-30% from deep and outside of Ducas the team doesn’t have any reliable three-point shooters. Even with that being said the Gaels are still going to have a great season and should be a bubble team at the very least.
