Notre Dame Basketball: 3 takeaways from double-digit road loss to Illinois
Blake Wesley is going to be a star
Notre Dame landed a very good player in guard Blake Wesley in the 2021 recruiting class and the college basketball world is starting to take notice including college basketball insider Jon Rothstein. The college basketball junkie in Rothstein told his followers to buy stock in Wesley if you have not done so already. The local South Bend product had a career-high with 24 points and three rebounds.
Wesley is a player that Notre Dame has been lacking the last few years. A player who can create his own shot off the dribble and really drive it to the rim. He had no fear driving it towards the rim at Kofi Cockburn. Did he have a few freshman moments? Of course, he did but the positives he showed tonight and in the other games so far this year outweigh the negatives by a long shot.
Wesley is obviously a key piece of the short bench with Notre Dame only playing about seven guys consistently but you wonder for how much longer? At some point, you have to believe that Mike Brey just pencils Wesley’s name in the starting lineup every night because of what he brings to the team when he is on the floor.
There are not a whole lot of positives when you lose three in a row but Blake Wesley sure is a positive right now for this team. Notre Dame fans may be hurting now but a future backcourt of Wesley and 2022 big-time recruit JJ Starling will be great to watch in the near future.
