Florida State Basketball: 3 takeaways from Seminoles blowout loss at Purdue

Backcourt Searching for Scoring Consistency
Caleb Mills 22 points, on 9-16 shooting, was by far the best performance of the night for Florida State. Mills was able to repeatedly get into driving lanes and disrupt the defense for premium looks at the basket. However, not even he has maintained consistent performances night in and night out for this Seminoles team.
Coach Hamilton has the benefit of being able to rely on 5+ guards a night to carry the burden of scoring. Not every program has that luxury, but in the case of Florida State, it’s hard to count on consistent production across the board especially in games like Purdue. Warley and Anthony Polite both faded into minor roles offensively against the Boilermakers, due to Mills own production.
Supplemental scoring off the bench wasn’t very reliable either, with Cleveland and Cam’Ron Fletcher combining for 13 points on 5-19 shooting. While it’s expected these young guns are to experience woes in their first full season of ACC basketball, the same cannot be expected of guys in the starting lineup if this team is to truly make an impact in the conference.
We have yet to see this program click on all cylinders against premier opponents this season and this aspect of the team’s offense will be a major factor in seeing that come to fruition.
